Mikhail Beketov, chief editor of Khimkinskaya Pravda newspaper,
Is known for his critical articles about the activities of Khimki administration. It was he who drew public attention to destruction of flyers’ graves near Leningradskoye shosse, and he also lit up the struggle foe Khimkinsky forest, large-scale cutting down of which was to be undertaken in connection with construction of speed highway Moscow – St.Petersburg.
Mikhail Beketov, according to his colleagues, was threatened not once. In May 2008 his car was exploded. As Beketov himself stated, the investigation of this incident was delayed in every possible way. When Beketov shared his suggestion that Khimki administration officials were interested in the frightening action, против журналиста было возбуждено a criminal case under the article «Slander» was lauched against him. The defender of Mikhail Beketov on this case was Stanislav Markelov, a well-known Moscow lawyer.
On November 13, 2008 an attack was launched on Mikhail Beketov.
In the state of coma with heaviest injuries the editor of Khimkinskaya Pravda was brought to Sklifosovsky Scientific Research Institute of First Aid.
Human rights organization IPO «Spravedlivost» became a public coordinator of Mikhail Beketov’s case.
At the moment of the tragedy Mikhail had no close relatives who could officially represent his interests at investigation authorities and medical institutions.
The persons empowered to act for the journalist were lawyers of «Справедливости» and Stanislav Markelov.
As there was struggle for the journalist’s life under way at SRI of First Aid журналиста, Staina Gurevich, lawyer of «Spravedlivost» tried stir the investigation to activity. The thing is that during the first several days after the accident investigators in Beketov’s case changed more than once.
Besides, IPO «Spravedlivost» declared the award of 500 thousand roubles for the information which will make it possible to find the executors and promoters of the mean crime and bring them to trial.
On November, 27 2008 года on the initiative of «Spravedlivost» a press conference aimed at drawing public attention to Mikhail Beketov’s case took place in the press centre of the Publishing House "Moskovsky Komsomolets".
Lawyer Stalina GUREVICH and chairman of board of directors of IPO "Spravedlivost" Andrey STOLBUNOV publicized new circumstances of the investigation of the attack launched at the journalist, working versions of the investigation, and they told the journalists that a few hours before the conference Mikhail Beketov came out of the coma.
November 28, 2008 Stalina Gurevich, Beketov’s lawyer, filed an application to the Investigation Committee of the Moscow regional Prosecutor’s Board of the RF asking to provide proper guard for the suffered journalist.
On November 29, 2008 года guard was placed near Mikhail Beketov’s chamber.
On December 1, 2008 chief editor of Kimkinskaya Pravda Mikhail Beketov underwent one more operation at Sklifosovsky SRI: several fingers on the journalist’s left hand were removed.
The amount of donations for Mikhail’s treatment reached 108 887 roubles by that time.
On December 4, 2008 года Mikhail Beketov underwent one more complicated operation at Sklifosovsky SRI:. This time it was removal of splinters from the brain tissue of the skull.
The journalist’s state is stable and severe.
On December 9, 2008 Andrey Stolbunov, head of IPO «Spravedlivost» held one more conference press conference. He criticized sharply organization of investigation of Beketov’s case. Stolbunov reported to journalists that the investigator in custody of the case does not find as far any signs of a designed attempt upon the journalist’s murder. The investigators had not even defined their version. They are several as before: from common hooliganism to journalist activities of the victim.
On December 22, 2008 Vladimir Strelchenko, mayor of Kimki, Moscow region cancelled his directive of laying a part of the highway Moscow – St.Petersburg through Khimkinsky forest.
Ecologists are sure: the forest was saved due to Mikhail Beketov, chief editor Of Khimkinskaya Pravda who was an active defender of the forest tract and steady critic of the actions of Khimki administration.
On December 29, 2008 года Mikhail Beketov, chief editor Of Khimkinskaya Pravda was transferred from the reanimation to general chamber. The journalist began reacting voices but cannot speak himself yet.
On January 9, 2009 Mikhail Beketov’s breathing stopped due to lung festering. He was moved hastily to the reanimation реанимацию of Sklifosovsky SRI of First Aid and linked to a medical ventilation apparatus.
On January 10, 2009 Mikhail Beketov was 51.
On January 12, 2009 activists of the Movement in Defence of Khimkinsky forest sent a letter the Russian Ministry of Defence asking to move Mikhail Beketov to N.N.Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital.
On January 28, 2009 Mikhail Beketov’s colleagues of Novaya Gazeta appealed to Ministry of Health Care and Social Development of the Russian Federation with a request to render assistance in Baketov’s transfer to a specialized clinic where rehabilitation can be made of the patients with head injuries.
On February 4, 2009 there appeared information that Mikhail Beketov could be discharged from the hospital and fixed to a local policlinic. Beketov’s defenders came out against such decision: they intend to strive that the journalist would remain under treatment at the hospital. Besides, the lawyers insist on strengthening of the guard for the editor of Khimkinskaya Pravda.
On February 9, 2009 Beketov’s lawyer appealed forоб strengthening of the guard and measures were taken to a quicker transfer of the journalist to the hospital for rehabilitation.
On February 18, 2009 it became know that Mikhail Beketov’s state worsened. By that time he had already been for several days at the reanimation chamber of Sklifosovsky SRI of First Aid.
On February 19, 2009 Mikhail Beketov’s letter to the President was published. Novaya Gazeta published the journalist’s message to the country’s head prepared before the attack and containing information of numerous cases of Khimki officials’ abuses. A proclamation signed by over a thousand Khimki people is attached to the letter.
On April 29, 2009 Mikhail Beketov was transferred to a rehabilitation centre.
On May 13, 2009 Mikhail Beketov got the status of first group invalid.
On May 29, 2009 the rehabilitation course was over which Mikhail Beketov was under t a medical centre on Ivankovskoye shosse. Thanks to great public response in the press, the journalist was left at the medical institution at least for a week.
On July 7, 2009 года it became known that Boris Gromov, governor of Moscow region signed a resolution of reduction of the area of cutting down of Khimkinsky forestfrom 3 kilometres to 100 metres. Mikhail Beketov, editor of Khimkinskaya Pravda who came out actively against cutting down of the forest tract for transport infrastructure is still at hospital. |
